going their way. right now, that would be the romney campaign. new polling in battleground states tonight, the latest cnn/orc survey in ohio done entirely after the first debate, now showing a four point obama lead. that's a statistical tie. it is a significant change from the seven to ten point lead the president enjoyed before the debate. new polling as well from sienna college that shows a statistical tie in pennsylvania. that's based on surveys done both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that

poll. governor romney now holding a four point lead among likely voters who were surveyed october 4th through the 7th, in other words, after the debate. that is a big swing from mid-september when president obama was ahead by eight. that was this afternoon, a short time ago, a poll running in the "detroit free press" shows the president's lead shrinking to just three points in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with t

vital. we have new polling tonight, new insight as well. also, mitt romney's primary debate guru joins us, the former top newt gingrich advisor is here. so is paul begala who helped bill clinton become president and is working to keep barack obama president. all of it with an eye to tuesday and beyond. that's because tuesday could be when president obama regains the initiative which he lost on stage in denver, or when mitt romney might consolidate his gains. first, quickly, the event that really sets the table for tuesday, last night's vice presidential debate, which depending on who you ask is either pulling president obama's case for re-election off the critical list or vindicated mitt romney's choice as paul ryan as running mate. depends what side of the political aisle you stand on. keeping them honest, each debater had moments that didn't quite stand up to closer scrutiny. first, paul ryan on the stimulus, which vice president biden called him on. >> they said that right now if we just passed the stimulus, the economy would grow at 4%. it's growing at 1.3. >> i love my friend here

romney's scenario. he was down by a handful, in some polls even more before the first debate. now he's one point ahead. just quickly, i want to show why that matters. going into the first debate, republicans were starting to get very nervous about this, the electoral college map. when you look at the improved polling now, the romney scenario, three two one, is much more realistic. what is that? take the three states obama won, indiana, which leaned romney's way, north carolina which you would have to favor for him, now the state of virginia with that improvement in the polls, now much more realistic to see. if he gets those three, he's in play. then you come to two. florida and ohio are the two. next big prize is in the romney scenario. ohio again, still a trouble mark for them but they're making ground. florida news is encouraging. if they can do the three and then the two, all they need is any one of the other states. so that's the key romney scenario. the president still has an easier path to 270. the romney prospects look a whole lot better now than just before that first debate. >> is

, maybe slightly ahead. here's to back it up, a tampa bay times/miami herald poll, a bigger romney lead. clearly, romney momentum. the obama campaign says it's not that big in florida but he's pulling up into at least a tie, maybe slightly ahead. that's not all. let's start out in the west. look at battleground state polls out here since the first debate. nevada on your left, colorado on your right. a dead heat in nevada, dead heat in colorado. romney's been doing well in the west holding his own. he's boosted his standing a bit since the first debate in the two battlegrounds out there. come over to the heartland, in the state of ohio, you see here, again, he was down a lot in wisconsin before the first presidential debate. that's paul ryan's home state. he's pulled into a statistical tie. this one's a bit more troublesome for the romney campaign. they are closer in ohio than before the first debate but still behind. the president has kept a small but steady lead in the state of ohio. that one's a bit of a problem for romney but he's at least closer from before the debate. after the deb

"outfront," the obama slide. a brand new poll of likely voters showing mitt romney out ahead and leading the president 49-45%. and look at this. since last month, the president is down six percentage points in that same poll. now, it is just one poll, but take a closer look at the numbers and there may be some pretty red flags out there for the incumbent. voters say romney did a better job at the debate on wednesday night. 66 to 20%. and that has helped change some voters views of governor romney. he's now polled even with obama among voters who see him as a quote strong leader. just last month, romney was trailing in that category, trailing, not just by a little. by 13 points, in fact. another contributing factor to obama's slide, women. this might be a surprise, but women are now evenly divided in their support of the two candidates. take a look at your screen. just last month, obama led romney by 18 points among women, so that is big. and keep in mind obama won this voting block by 13 points in 2008, so it's getting even bigger. another contributing factor to romney's big gain

joe biden can sort of blunt romney's momentum, which is beginning to show up in the polls. we haven't seen anything truly definitive, but we know most people thought that mitt romney won the debate. democrats are looking for biden to blunt that momentum. can he do that? >> of course, joe biden, again, knows how to communicate very, very well. i think when people talk about last week, expectations for president obama are always exceedingly high and it was relatively easy for mr. romney who had an 11th hour conversion. we recall that he is the etch-a-sketch guy that has transformed himself and quite frankly, we always have to wonder which mitt is going to show up. so if you just lay out lie after lie after lie about your own plan as well as what the president has been talking about, of course, you can look good. vice president biden will do very, very well. he knows what has been going on. he is in touch with the american public, and i'm just hopeful mr. ryan will tell the truth. whether it's about medicare and that it's a voucher program, that mr. romney and mr. ryan, their hea

lackluster performance last week in denver. what you've seen, and the polls show it, the romney/ryan ticket has momentum. the polls have tightened in recent days following mitt romney's performance, where he obviously won that debate. there's a lot more attention here. if joe biden is able to perform very well -- and he's a pretty good debater. if he's able to perform pretty well perhaps he can stem some of that momentum, at least dampen a little criticism heading into the debate next week in new york, buy the president a little time. if paul ryan clearly dominates in this debate it will be seen very much as a one-two punch and that will just mean more momentum. >> they've been, as we call it in college, cramming. how have both of them been preparing? >> reporter: yeah. it is like cramming. i think it's sort of like going back, studying for -- one aide told me it's like studying for the s.a.t.s in the middle of a campaign. they go over a lot of briefing materials. they're brushing up on domestic and foreign policy, getting to certainly know each other's positions on everything. there's a lo

can't say any more that debates don't matter. the new cnn poll, poll of polls, mitt romney has a slight lead with likely voters, 48% to 47%. his performance certainly showed that you can't say it doesn't matter anymore. there is no bigger swing state than ohio, where you are. >> reporter: the history tells you no republican has ever been elected president without winning the state of ohio. can you do the math and have romney win without this state? yes. is it likely? no. before the debate some polls had him down as many as nine points in ohio. new cnn poll row leased last night has him down four, 51-47. another group, american research group show ed romney up a point in ohio. no question. just like in the national polls, a bit of a boost. romney is up in the suburbs, up among independents. there's signs of strength here from romney, we can tell you there are a few soft spots he needs to work on. >> john king in ohio, covering the debates as well. thank you very much. watch live coverage of the debate tomorrow night, 7:00 eastern. watch it on cnn or on cnn.com. >>> happening this morning
